In this video, we’re going to talk about the major formats, the differences between them, and why you even need to know. Today I want to talk about formats–not the sexiest topic, I know, but important. There are 3 major formats. As an generator, you need to know what they are because you’ll be using all of them quite a bit. The first is Amazon’s proprietary MOBI format. This is the file type that all Kindle machines use.
MOBI documents are basically a change on the second format, which is the EPUB. EPUB, suddenly for “electronic publication” is the industry-standard format. This is the file type that virtually all other e-reading designs use—Nook, Kobo, Android, etc. The EPUB standard was established by the International Digital Publishing Forum, which modernizes the format regularly. The current touchstone is EPUB 3. All you need to know about EPUB 3 is the fact that it substantiates multimedia content and fastened layouts, which are helpful for children’s journals. “Theres lots” of differences between MOBIs and EPUBs, but they do the same thing—offer a rich, immersive learning know-how. The formats are similar enough that you can use a program like Calibre to alter between the two with little to no loss in excellence. At their middle, MOBI and EPUBS are just a cluster of HTML registers the hell is carried by your invention into a -like ordeal, much like the method an internet site consists of HTML and is translated by a browser.
The third and final format is one whose popularity has lessened in the last few years—and that’s the PDF. PDF records, also known as Portable Digital Files were invented by Adobe in 90 s, and they used to be the preferred format. The welfare of a PDF is that it’s a WYSIWIG format—what you see is what you get. When you look at a PDF, you can be sure that it will appear routinely on any design, with all formatting and personas saved precisely as they were designed. The problem with PDFs is that they just don’t translate well to mobile designs. You often have to pinch and zoom to discover the textbook, and it takes a lot of effort to read them. Despite their refer, they’re not as portable as ebooks, either. They also receive lackluster approval on most devices. But don’t dismis PDFs from your formatting strategy—there is a substantial number of readers and reviewers out there who still prefer to read in PDF format, so you’ll want to make sure you have PDFs of your journal readily accessible. So those are the 3 formats. When it’s time to export your volume, you’ll necessitate a MOBI file for Amazon, an EPUB for everywhere else, and a PDF for that small-time subset of your readers who prefer to read this format.
